In the light of UN Conference on Sustainable Development, RIO +20, Cairo Climate Talks holds its 8th monthly panel discussion on the topic “Paving the way to a Sustainable Egypt”. It will be held on 10th of July 2012 at 7:00 pm in the premises of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service, 11 Sh. Saleh Ayoub, Zamalek).

Guest speakers are Dr. Ibrahim Abou Leish, Founder and Chairman of SEKEM Initiative, Dr. Günther Bachmann, Secretary General of the German Council for Sustainable Development, Syada Greiss, Head of Environmental Protection Association, and Eng. Ahmed El Dorghamy, Co-founder of the Green Arm of Nahdet El Mahrousa NGO and Energy & Environment Consultant at CEDARE. The panel will be moderated by the journalist Amira El-Ahl.

The panel addresses questions like: What is sustainable development and how can it be achieved? How can we promote awareness of environmental challenges and sustainable ways to face them in daily life? Does sustainability have a different meaning in the Developing world and the industrialized countries? How can each of us help as an individual to work towards a sustainable society?

This Cairo Climate Talks panel follows the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development – also known as RIO +20 – that took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012. According to the United Nations, sustainability calls for a decent standard of living for everyone today without compromising the needs of future generations. This means finding better ways of doing things. Such as: How can we help people move out of poverty and get good jobs, while protecting the environment? How can we provide access to clean energy for everyone, and make sure that the energy we produce doesn’t contribute to climate change? How can we make sure that everyone can get the water, food and nutrition they need? How can we shape our cities so that everyone can enjoy a decent quality of life? How can we build better transportation systems without causing too much congestion and pollution?

Cairo Climate Talks” is a series of events meant to provide a platform to exchange experience, raise awareness and foster cooperation between policymakers, the business community, the scientific community as well as civil society. It is held in cooperation between the German Embassy in Cairo, in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs, the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), the German Academic Exchange service (DAAD), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Egyptian German High Level Joint Committee for Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection (JCEE).
