At the end of May, the wind turbine manufacturer Enercon signed a cooperation agreement with Markbygden Vind AB, an affiliate company of project developers Svevind AB, Tavelsjö, to develop and install one of the largest interconnected on-shore wind park projects in Europe.
The projected wind park will be located in Markbygden, in the district of Piteå, and by the time it has reached its final development phase by 2020, it will generate 3000-3500 megawatts of power over an area of 450 square kilometres. An annual current yield of 8-10 terawatt-hours is predicted for the 2-megawatt-class turbines. Enercon is also planning among other things to set up a production facility in the region for the concrete towers, which should create 150-200 local jobs. A service unit will also be put together to maintain the turbines and ensure the safe operation of the park. The installation of the first turbines is planned to begin in autumn 2008, while the project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
