German team explores integration of renewable energy devices

A team of researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) is developing a smart energy management system that allows the communication between components from different manufacturers of solar and wind devices

In order to make this possible the team works on standardizing the system’s protocols. This could also increase its overall compatibility regarding different applications

In the near future, their achievements could simplify the construction of self-sufficient power generation systems that use different types of renewable energy devices such as wind and solar to ensure a constant and reliable flow of electricity. Such an energy management system helps to balance demand for electricity and its supply coming from different sources

A model of such a system has been built by the Fraunhofer team at a site in Wadi El Natrun, Egypt, where it is used to draw well water for irrigation. This system combines a photovoltaic system with a device tracking the sun, a small battery and a water pump. The photovoltaic system powers the pump and the tracking system, and the battery allows the tracker to turn with the sun in order to collect its energy. ISE’s aim is now to standardize this whole system so that the central computer can immediately communicate with any devices added
